Sometimes what we feel can’t be shared with the person we want to share them with, because of possible repercussions, or maybe that person is no longer even around to hear you. Whether it was a friend that hurt you, or a boss that pissed you off, anyone, anywhere can have an effect on us. The best way to get these feelings out is to write a ‘unsent letter’.
Being able to write what you feel without taking anything into account, not trying to be polite, or having to ‘tone it down’ is incredibly satisfying. I have used this technique many times myself, in so many forms. Some have been sad, others angry, and a few have been loving disappointment. One thing I have found is that reading others unsent letters can be helpful too, as many of us can relate to the emotion being expressed. Because these are written anonymously the writer is able to write from the heart and not hold back anything, making the enjoyment of reading the letter that much more special.
I also get a little satisfaction knowing that someone has read my letter, the ones I wrote before, just to be torn up and tossed away were not nearly as freeing as the ones I had published. Even though the person I was writing to would never read it, I knew someone would.
So, welcome to “Letters to Breathe”, the place to submit your unsent letters so you can get the weight off your chest and breathe again. Take a look around, I have the letters listed by themes, so you can easily browse the subject you are interested in. Don’t forget to submit your own letters, we wouldn’t be here without them.
